HEA GSA Spotlight of the Month
Committment. Connectedness. Concern.
These three words exemplify my experience at Service NC State this fall. As a group leader, I worked with ten college women to help them see how community service can have a lasting impact on themselves and the greater world. Most students would rather be in bed at 8 a.m. on a Saturday morning. By the end of my shift, there was no where else I wanted to be. The opportunity to connect and affect younger NC State students while challenging myself was extremely effective. To know that on top of all of that, I was giving back to hundreds of thousands of impoverished people in the world.
During the reflection, my students began to realize how privileged they are. Transformative learning does indeed happen outside of the classroom. Early Saturday mornings are a prime time for this learning! Hence; this opportunity was priceless.
